Tipsy
Never have I been tripped into an abyss of such colour and wonder as when I hear a record by San Francisco duo Tipsy. The quirky and eccentrically esoteric sound collages this pair inject, delightfully saunter us into a realm of bizarre space lounge exotica.
This is the real deal. Formed in 1996 by Tim Digulla and David Gardner, our experimentalists found a home at the brilliant Asphodel Records. The Bay Area native and his Hawaiian born friend started crafting and experimenting with cut-n-paste sampling eventually mutating their weird sound. Their playful noise expands matter and comically twists every ounce of juice within our very cell walls, forcing us to dance.
A whole mirage of instruments and samples gleefully intercept, intertwine and ultimately collaborate, creating a wacky craziness you can’t quite fathom. This is a screwball comedy playing off the sensitivity of our minds. The perfect genius that is their début ‘Trip Tease’ and its follow-up ‘Uh-Oh!’ create moods of a surreal nature.
The brief lounge and exotica revival around the mid-90s secured some of their sounds in the use of television shows such as The Sopranos and Sex & The City as well as in beer and soda commercials! However, you cannot pigeonhole their sound and I don’t think it should fall upon unenlightened ears effortlessly, it is purely out-of-this-world strangeness, you need to strive for it. My spiel cannot do this duo justice, I merely urge you to seek out their records!
Wig out!!!
